2011 Governors Arts Awards
Arts Education
Award Recipient: Deborah Booth, Epping
Deborah Booth, an arts educator at Epping Middle School, is highly respected for her innovations in integrating the creative arts into the broader curriculum. Her colleagues and students testify to her extraordinary success in developing collaborative projects that have connected areas such as: ceramics and science; writing and visual arts; watercolor painting and social studies; mathematics and quilt design; and video production and computer technology.
Ms. Booth’s students have produced plays and exhibitions under the guidance of visiting artists and they have won top honors at the New Hampshire Scholastic Arts Awards; and perhaps most importantly, under her direction, they have fully engaged parents and community members in the school arts program, helping everyone to understand the intrinsic value and importance of an education that includes the arts.
One of Deborah’s eighth grade students commented: “Mrs. Booth, where do I begin? . . . She makes class fun and inviting . . . . When I walk into her class it is unlike any other. I feel I can accomplish anything.”
